4. What exactly counts as a mention, citation or recommendation?
Last updated

Make the scoring rules auditable before discussing an overall AI visibility score.
Put to: Patrick Stox, Lily Ray and Mike King.
Why it matters to buyers: Ahrefs documents distinct mention and citation measures, alongside impressions derived from Google search volumes. Those are product-specific definitions, not interchangeable measures of actual AI audience exposure. (help.ahrefs.com)
Ask: “Can a reviewer reconstruct your score from the saved answers, and how do you handle a brand that is named but explicitly rejected?”
Proposed desk rubric for experts to challenge:
| Measure | Proposed counting rule |
|---|---|
| Brand mention | The answer names the correctly identified business or product, regardless of sentiment. |
| Owned-site citation | The answer cites at least one qualifying URL controlled by the business. |
| Third-party supporting citation | A cited external page contains relevant evidence about the business; verify the page separately. |
| Explicit recommendation | The answer affirmatively presents the product as suitable for the stated need. |
| Accuracy | Checkable product claims agree with dated reference evidence, or are marked unresolved. |
A good answer should cover: denominator selection; parent-company and product aliases; negative comparisons; human review of ambiguous recommendations; and separate treatment of no-overview results, refusals and technical failures.
Mike King argues that AI tracking lacks a single universal visibility truth. Ask him to distinguish that limitation from response-level classification errors, which remain open to direct checking. (ipullrank.com)
