Use native reporting before assuming you need to buy every measurement capability. Google announced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026; its announcement says worldwide rollout was complete by 31 August 2026. Advice that treats all Google AI visibility as inseparable from ordinary Search Console reporting is therefore out of date. (developers.google.com)

The tools nevertheless measure different things:

Evidence sourceWhat it can tell youWhat you should not infer
Google Search Console’s generative AI reportImpressions for links appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device and date viewsA complete record of brand mentions, recommendations or resulting sales. The documented report is impression-focused. (support.google.com)
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI reportingCitation activity; its June 2026 expansion introduced Intents, Topics, Citation Share and CompareBing explicitly says Citation Share is not traffic share, a ranking score or a disclosure of competitor domains. (blogs.bing.com)
Google Analytics 4Its documented AI Assistant channel groups traffic from recognised assistant sourcesGoogle AI Overviews and AI Mode are excluded from that channel. (support.google.com)
Your controlled prompt panelHow selected assistants answer your disclosed buying questions under recorded conditionsTotal US demand, actual customer exposure or market share. This is the scope of the proposed research design, not a population survey.

Keep native reports, synthetic prompt tests and commercial outcomes alongside one another—not blended into an unexplained index.
