10. How do we find the websites ChatGPT cites for our competitors?
Last updated

Extract exact citation URLs from answers that recommend competitors, then examine the pages themselves. A domain-level leaderboard is a starting point, not an explanation of why a recommendation occurred.
Bing’s own reporting draws a similar boundary: citation activity identifies content referenced in supported answers, not its importance or the cause of its inclusion. (blogs.bing.com)
Build a competitor citation map with these fields:
| Field | Why to retain it |
|---|---|
| Prompt, surface, date and observation ID | Preserves the context |
| Full citation URL and final destination | Distinguishes individual pages and redirects |
| Source category | Separates vendor pages, reviews, journalism, communities and directories |
| Brands actually discussed on the page | Avoids assuming that every cited page supports every named brand |
| Relevant passage and publication/update date | Supports a factual review |
| Accessibility status | Identifies pages you could not verify |
| Recurrence in the sample | Shows repeated observations without implying market-wide reach |
| Proposed action and owner | Converts the map into work |
Our suggested action categories are correct an owned page, request an external factual correction, develop genuinely useful evidence, consider a relevant editorial opportunity, and take no action.
Do not claim that a page caused a recommendation merely because it appeared in the same answer. Where the cited passage does not support the associated claim, record a citation-quality problem rather than an authority opportunity.
