What changed, and what does it mean for buyers?

1. Can Bing identify relevant citation gaps?

Yes, within the scope of its new beta. On 13 October, Bing announced Topics Portfolio in its AI Performance report. It groups grounding queries into themes and surfaces opportunity queries where other sites appear but yours does not. Availability depends on sufficient site data; topic figures are approximate, and opportunity citation volumes appear as ranges. (blogs.bing.com)

Buyer action: Inspect one topic matching an active buying use case. Treat it as an investigation lead—not a complete map of US customer demand or proof that a rival is recommended.

2. Did Google change the conditions of our AI Mode benchmark?

Potentially, depending on the account and model used. Google’s 13 October announcement made Gemini 4 Argon available in the Gemini app and AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. That is not a statement that every free session uses the same model. (blog.google)

Buyer action: Record subscription tier, interface and observable model information. If those conditions change, label the break before comparing results with September or rewarding a supplier for an apparent improvement.

3. Does every ChatGPT answer involve a fresh web search?

Not in the dataset Ahrefs published on 12 October. Its analysis covered 66.6 million free, logged-out responses from August and September; 14.4% triggered web search. This is supplier-produced research about a specified collection setup—not a representative estimate of all ChatGPT conversations or B2B buying journeys. (ahrefs.com)

Buyer action: Ask whether your AI visibility software forces search, observes default behaviour or mixes the two. Keep “brand absent from the answer” separate from “owned website not cited”.

4. Should a change in citation sources redirect our PR budget?

Not without category-specific checks. Meltwater’s 15 October report, covering September, found declining YouTube citation share across the six models with meaningful YouTube activity. Its study used more than 4,000 unbranded prompts across eight platforms and a mix of high-intent consumer categories. It is not a B2B SaaS benchmark. (meltwater.com)

Buyer action: Recheck the sources behind your own comparison and shortlist prompts before changing a channel allocation.
