What does each score band mean?
Use the band to choose the next investigation, then apply the purchasing gates below. A strong total must not hide a critical weakness.
| Score | Readiness band | What it means in this rubric | Recommended next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–11 | Define the problem | Too much of the proposed purchase rests on assumptions or missing ownership. | Write the decision brief, review customer evidence and assign an owner. Defer a broad retainer or annual monitoring commitment. |
| 12–23 | Build a defensible baseline | Some foundations exist, but evidence or delivery arrangements remain incomplete. | Run a bounded diagnostic, repair the prompt set and document collection methods. Buy narrowly scoped help only for the identified bottleneck. |
| 24–34 | Consider a controlled pilot | You have enough foundations to design a test, subject to the gates below. | Compare a scoped pilot with existing SEO, content and technical resources. Agree costs, responsibilities and stop criteria before starting. |
| 35–45 | Ready for rigorous procurement or expansion review | Your organisation is comparatively well prepared to challenge methods and act on findings. | Validate supplier evidence or review completed pilot results. Expand only where the additional scope supports a worthwhile decision. |
A score of 35 does not mean “buy”. A score of 10 does not mean “ignore a serious factual error”. Readiness, urgency and demonstrated purchasing need are separate judgements.
